One of the most child friendly operating systems is DoudouLinux.

Just download it (free and IT IS legal!), burn it as an IMAGE. Than one can either use it as LIVE CD (ie not install it, but just try it). Second option would be to install it as a dual boot (ie one could still have windows and linux installed on the same computer without harming each other! One could still fetch documents from the windows partition. To download it just go HERE.
In linux, one could still produce or read documents made by windows operating system or programs. In Linux the child would learn not to be afraid of choice and start experimenting with new things without harming the operating system. Please remember that in Linux there are NO such things as viruses and it should NOT crash the way the windows operating system does….so parents please remember you’re going to save a lot of money by NOT calling the PC technician for removing viruses when using Linux!
